A New Beginning: Making Counseling Successful
11/15/2019

Since 1949, May has been known as Mental Health Awareness Month. According to National Institute of Mental Health mental illnesses affect 19% of the adult population, 46% of teenagers and 13% of children each year. People struggling with their mental health may be in your family, live next door, teach your children, or sit in the same church pew.

A mental health condition isn’t the result of one event. Many factors such as genetics, environment and lifestyle influence whether someone develops a mental health condition. A stressful job or home life makes some people more susceptible, as do traumatic life events like being the victim of a crime.

Only half of those affected receive treatment, often because of the stigma attached to mental health. Mental health problems can cause changes in one’s thinking, feelings, and behavior. In order to maintain both your emotional and mental health, it’s important to stay aware of your own needs and feelings. Listen to the cues that your body is sending you when stress and emotions build up. Try to maintain a good balance between your normal responsibilities and the things you enjoy.

A few tips to help improve your mental health:

Get Active – exercising has been noted to be one of the most effective ways to improve mental health. It relieves stress, improves memory, helps you sleep better, and boosts your overall mood. Don’t worry about running a marathon. A walk around your neighborhood is a great start!

Eat Healthy – Your body needs a mix of nutrients and minerals to function well, so making sure you’re eating a balanced diet is truly vital for mental health.

Get Involved – attend a local church and meet new people. Do something you love. You’ll be able to connect with people who share common interests.

Positive Affirmations – Affirmations are positive statements that can help you to challenge and overcome negative thoughts. For example, replace “I’m not good enough” with I am deserving (fine/okay).

Seek Professional Help – talking with someone who is skilled in mental health can help you develop insight into ongoing issues.
